The attributes compared

• Category. Alkali metal, transition metal, nonmetal, noble gas, lanthanide and so on. The attribute that narrows the pool fastest.
• Phase. Solid, liquid or gas at room temperature. Only two elements are liquid.
• Block. s, p, d or f. Tells you which slab of the table you are standing in at a glance.
• Period. The row number, 1 to 7. An up arrow means the target sits further down the table.
• Group. The column number, 1 to 18. Lanthanides and actinides all count as group 3.
• Atomic number. 1 to 118. With the arrows this is the sharpest clue on the board.

Tips

• Open from the middle of the table. Something like iron or tin gives you the most information on move one.
• Treat the atomic number arrow as a binary search. Every guess can halve the remaining range.
• If the category lands, stay in that column. The alkali metals are a single vertical strip; the period arrow closes it immediately.
• Block f means you are in the lanthanides or actinides. That is thirty elements, and the period arrow tells you which series.
