Historydle is an attribute-comparison game over a pool running from Alexander to Atatürk and Cleopatra to Marie Curie. After every guess five attributes are compared so you can see how close you landed. Tries are unlimited, so you can eliminate methodically instead of gambling.
The attributes compared
Field. Science, art, literature, state, military, philosophy, religion or exploration. The identity the figure is best known for.
Region. Where they did their defining work: Anatolia, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa or the Americas.
Era. Antiquity, Middle Ages, Early Modern or Modern. The attribute that quarters the pool fastest.
Birth year. Arrows tell you whether the target was born earlier or later. BC years show as "356 BC".
Gender. More than a fifth of the pool is women, spread across every era rather than bunched into the modern one.
Tips
Pin the era first. There are only four buckets, so landing it removes three quarters of the pool in one move.
Read era and birth year together. Era is the coarse cut, the birth arrow is the fine tuning. Once era is green the arrow tells you where inside it to look.
Field has eight values and is the narrowest axis. Hitting exploration or religion cuts you down to a handful of names.
Do not forget Anatolia. Over thirty figures sit on that shelf, Homer and Thales among them.
Who's in the pool
All 186 figures are long settled into history. The bar is high-school general knowledge; anyone who needs academic depth to recognise is left out, and twentieth-century dictators and perpetrators of atrocities are excluded outright. The Anatolian shelf carries Mimar Sinan, Rumi, Mehmed the Conqueror, Piri Reis, Evliya Çelebi, Roxelana, Atatürk and more.
